Sculpting the Skull

To begin, you will sculpt a generalized human skull from a ZBrush primitive sphere. This exercise describes a high-resolution sculpting method. The sculpting process begins at a higher subdivision level, and the form will be built using the Claytubes and Rake brushes.

As discussed in Chapter 1, complex shapes can be broken down into simpler forms for easier study and replication. The initial shape you want to strive for is shown in Figure 2-26. Notice the rounded facial plane and the overall simplification of the head into a single basic shape. By working toward this first step and building all the secondary forms on it, you can maintain a sense of structural integrity throughout the sculpting process.
