Data source objects (DSOs) are objects that can imbed structured data, including XML, into HTML pages.

Almost from the beginning of the Web there has been a necessity to access databases and to send structured data down to the Web client. Usually the following scenario was enacted:

1. The client requested data from the server.

2. The server accessed the data store and retrieved the data.

3. This was then wrapped in an HTML stream and sent to the client.
