Part I of this book contains a brief introduction to the protocols and concepts that concern the Web, focusing on aspects that are relevant to caching and replication. It provides the background necessary to understand the remainder of the book. Chapter 1 introduces basic networking terms and concepts. Chapter 2 provides background about the Internet Protocol and routing. Chapter 3 introduces TCP, the protocol that transports most Web traffic. In Chapter 4 we describe more standards and protocols used by the Web, including URL, DNS, HTTP, and HTML.
