ECM as an Application

When you install ECM as an application, you usually only care about one specific use: a public-facing Web site, a departmental knowledge base, collaborative project spaces, document scanning and processing, enterprise publishing, or highly structured content authoring environments—for example, United States Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approval documents or technical manuals. Newer varieties of these applications have a content management system as back-end data storage; however, older versions may be locked away in a hard-to-access content silo. These are sometimes called content-centric applications, or content-enabled vertical applications, which are covered in greater detail in Chapter 7.
