The two networks that have had the biggest issues with hacking are Twitter and Facebook. The most prevalent way to hack into other accounts is through the use of bad links that convince people to enter their username and password. Thinking that they are just logging back into a service, this information is actually collected by a phishing link that has nothing to do with the network services. Then, as spammers or hackers collect these usernames and passwords, viruses or other bad content can spread through the social account.

Everyone is always on the alert when it comes to Facebook. Each week, news breaks that yet another FB hacking or phishing attempt is making its rounds through the popular social network.

In Facebook's enhanced privacy and security settings, there is now a way to help ensure your account is protected against these harmful attempts to attack your account.

  1. In the drop-down menu located at the top-right side of your Facebook account, go to Account Settings.
  2. Next to the Account Security subheading, click Change.
  3. Select Secure Browsing (https). Set up your account to use secure browsing sessions every time you log into Facebook by enabling the Browse Facebook on a Secure Connection (https) Whenever Possible box (see Figure 13-3).
