A powerful feature of LinkedIn is the Recommendations feature. In the past, when you applied for a job, you submitted a resume and several letters of recommendations. Now with LinkedIn Recommendations, you do not need to directly solicit these letters.

imagesUse the Recommendations feature in the same way as you would a “real-life” letter of recommendation.

Within your profile there is the Recommendations section. These are endorsements from people who may have been a client, colleague, or employer. These add to your online profile by enriching it and adding more information about who you are and what you brought to that position. The fact that someone was willing to take the time to write a recommendation about you shows something about your character (see Figure 8-4).

Some things to keep in mind about recommendations:

  • When requesting a recommendation, give the person some guidance on what to write about you. You can write something with keywords you are looking for, a specific project, or a client. Some help like this can increase the odds you get the recommendation.
  • Let the person know the recommendation does not need to be the typical long letter. Just a short paragraph gets the job done.
