Day-for-Night

Directors often shoot scenes in the daytime that are later changed to night scenes, a technique called day-for-night. Why not just shoot at night? Although many advances have been made in film sensitivity with the advent of digital filmmaking, it’s still harder to shoot at night and achieve a proper exposure. Directors often shoot in the daytime and rely on matte artists and compositors to make the transformation in post-production.

Open the file MunichOldTown_BK1066.tif in Photoshop. This will be your starting point (Figure 11-1).
