Share Files with AirDrop

Have you ever wanted to swap a file between a couple of your own computers without setting up file sharing and mounting a volume? Or pass a file to a friend or colleague without joining a common Wi-Fi network, setting up ad-hoc networking, or emailing it?

AirDrop is a solution to that common problem. Added in 10.7 Lion and iOS 7, the feature lets you find and share files with other users near you. Unfortunately, it took until 10.10 Yosemite for AirDrop to work between iOS and OS X! And there remain some differences and complications as I discuss below.
