10.2 3G/4G/LTE Technologies within the War Theater

Figure 10.1 illustrates a potential deployment scenario for commercial 3G/4G/LTE cellular technologies in a tactical network. Essentially, the figure shows three separate mechanisms or use cases (described later) for connecting smartphone or 3G/4G/LTE technology into tactical infrastructure. In the figure, we assume that we are working with the US Army's tactical GIG. Each use case requires some sort of gateway functionality at the access point to the core network. This functionality provides additional functions and security which interfaces with the NetOps environment for configuration, monitoring, and control. The TCG, mentioned early in this chapter, will be used to encompass this collection of features that will vary depending on its deployed location in the tactical architecture and which use case is in effect.
