Packages

A software package consists of general information about the software to deploy, including the name, version, manufacturer, language, and where source files for the package are located (if that package has source files). Packages are created either from a package definition file (such as an MSI, SMS, or PDF file—discussed in more detail later in the “Creating a Package” section), or manually. Software packages within ConfigMgr can be a repackaging of the software packaged by a vendor or an unintended installation direct from the vendor. ConfigMgr uses the MSI installation file to automatically populate many of the software deployment settings available for the package and program.
