Systems Management Server 2003

Microsoft released the next major version of SMS in November 2003. The release was so late in 2003, it could have been named SMS 2004! This release added integration with Active Directory along with functionality supporting a mobile workforce.

The SMS server infrastructure remained largely the same with the inclusion of Internet Information Server (IIS), which arguably raised complexity but brought significant benefits (such as communication over HTTP and the use of the Background Intelligent Transfer System, also known as BITS).
