1.7 STRESS–STRAIN DIAGRAM

The behaviour of a material at different stages of loading is represented by a diagram called as stress–strain diagram. A stress–strain diagram of ductile material like mild steel is a conventional diagram to understand fully the load-deformation behaviour of a material.

A ductile material subjected to a tensile test passes through different stages before reaching the failure stage. Figure 1.6 shows a typical stress–strain diagram obtained from a tension test conducted on a mild steel bar.
