Hour 19 Scripting with JavaScript

You know Java, but that means little when it comes to JavaScript. The names are similar but their features and goals differ. JavaScript enables you to add multimedia capabilities to your Web site. JavaScript is linked to DHTML (dynamic HTML). You will learn about DHTML in Hour 20, “Dynamic HTML and XML,” and this hour’s JavaScript discussion provides a good introduction to Hour 20’s concepts.

By itself, JavaScript is a script-based programming environment that you use to spruce up Web sites and make those sites more interactive. You embed JavaScript source code directly inside your HTML code, unlike compiled Java applets, which are pulled along with the Web page to run on the user’s computers.
