Locking a File

You can see information about every file icon in a Get Info window (details about Get Info are in Chapter 28). One of the things you can do in a Get Info window is lock a file so no one can make changes to it.

To get the Get Info window: In the Finder, click once on an icon, then press Command I or go the the File menu and choose “Get Info.”

There is a “Locked” checkbox in the lower-left corner of the Get Info window. If you check this box (click once on it), this file cannot be renamed or inadvertently thrown away—as soon as it hits the Trash, a dialog box comes up telling you a locked file cannot be thrown away.
