Part I. Fundamentals

REALbasic is a development environment, a programming language, an object-oriented hierarchy of classes and subclasses, and an application framework. In Part I all of these aspects of REALbasic are explained.

You’ll be guided through the REALbasic workspace, and learn how to create, edit, and debug your application project there; you’ll find the syntax of the REALbasic language summarized, along with a discussion of how its fundamental datatypes are handled; you’ll learn what object-oriented programming is, how REALbasic enforces and simplifies object orientation both in its workspace and in its language, how to envision your application in terms of objects, and when and how to create new classes of object; and you’ll see how REALbasic structures an application by means of the hierarchy of built-in classes and the event messages it automatically sends them.
