17 NEWSPAPER STRUCTURE

The circulation and staffing of a national daily is obviously much greater than that of a town evening paper or country weekly but the basic functions are the same, differing only in scale. They are: to collect, check and typeset the news, features and advertising; to take and process the pictures, to put them all together to produce a newspaper that answers the needs of the readers and reaches the sellers on time, and to account for the money transactions involved. One might add that in order to continue these functions it is also necessary to make some profit for the shareholders.
