5.0. Basics of Mathematics

After discussions on risks, consequences, etc. it is better to take a recess and refresh memory on basics of mathematics. In risk analysis, especially in quantitative hazard analysis, for example, fault tree analysis (FTA), event tree analysis (ETA), and SIL discussions, this will be very helpful. During these refreshing discussions relevant fundamental details about logic gates, set theory, and probability theory will be covered at the rudimentary level only (brief to restrict the volume of the book). Fig. I/5.0-1 gives an overall view of basic mathematics discussed here, including various symbols, etc. to be used later.
