Product development starts with the definition of a requirements baseline captured in the specification. This baseline is then used to drive the product design, build, and test processes. Figure 4.2 depicts a simple product development process (also referred to as a waterfall).

The specification is the foundation for all development activities. The more stable the foundation, the more efficiently the development will be completed. For the product to be successful, the specification must reflect the customers’ needs as closely as possible.
