Chapter 41. Table of Contents and Index

As long as you have used paragraph styles throughout your document, InDesign can automatically create a table of contents (TOC) from your document—or even a group of documents, if you are using the Book feature. InDesign can also build an index for your document, though it cannot make it automatically; you have to index entries manually. Here’s how it works.

Building a TOC

The TOC feature works almost exactly like the Lists feature in QuarkXPress and the Create TOC feature in PageMaker, though the interface is a bit different. InDesign makes a table of contents in one step, using the Table of Contents feature (which you can select from the Layout menu; see Figure 41-1).
