Comparing NTFS Permissions

Almost all drives used in a Microsoft environment use the New Technology File System (NTFS). NTFS manages the files on the drives, helps maintain file integrity, and provides security.

One of the most important benefits of NTFS is security. You’re able to restrict access to any file on an NTFS drive with the use of permissions. The topics in this section identify the different types of permissions and how they interact.

Identifying Basic NTFS Permissions

Figure 4-1 shows the properties page of an NTFS folder named Study Notes. Notice that the third tab is labeled Security. This is where you can view the NTFS permissions on any folder or file that has been created on an NTFS volume.
