Protecting System State

The System State is a collection of system-specific data that is maintained by Windows and can be backed up as a single unit, including items such as the Registry, COM+ Class Registration database, boot files (including the system files), and system files that are under Windows File Protection. A System State backup is not an entire system backup, but a backup is designed to return a computer to a known state should the need arise.

If a computer already has the protection agent installed, DPM can be used to protect its System State. Just like file server data, a protected computer’s System State is shown as a data source, which can be added as a member of a protection group. An example of this is shown in Figure 11.2 ...
