Project: Assigning Materials

The first stage of texturing requires the basic assignment of materials. As discussed in Chapter 1, “Texturing and Lighting a Product, Part 1,” you can either assign a unique material to each surface or allow surfaces to share material assignments. For this scene, it's best to combine both techniques. For example, in Figure 3.7, a set of assigned materials is shown. A number of materials are assigned to single surfaces. The Back_ material is assigned to the Back surface, the Collar_ material is assigned to the Collar surface, and so on. Note that these materials have an underscore (_) added as a suffix. (Maya does not allow duplicate names.)
