20  Pay and hours of work– legal constraints

Despite the portrait of a fairly open labour market described in Chapter 15 there are constraints imposed on management in terms of working hours and minimum pay levels. The legislative environment comes from a number of related sources, mainly European social policy and British labour law. Whilst laws change the recent legislation on maximum working hours and minimum pay represent a radical and permanent change. The focus on this body of law is on:
