Summary

This chapter surveyed some of the distinguishing characteristics of Linux as a desktop and as a server. We chose Red Hat Linux 7.1 for all of Elsolutions' desktops and servers. We installed it alongside Windows XP, and then looked under the hood. We discussed Linux installation and maintenance principles common to both desktops and servers, particularly how to nondestructively install Linux alongside a Windows system. There will be more on this subject in Chapter 9, “System Administration.”

Linux services, or daemons, correspond to Windows XP services. The init process is the mother of all processes. It starts services grouped by runlevel.
