Initiating is the ability to take action on a self-problem without being forced or threatened into it by others or circumstances. Many people need external reinforcement to be motivated to change. They cannot self-motivate.

Initiating is the most critical aspect of personability because it involves action. Just because someone is open to new experiences, has self-insight, and has the ability to take ownership does not guarantee that he or she can act on these first three personability dimensions.
