CREATING ARTICLE LISTS FROM A CATEGORY

Parent notices are sent home twice a week at FES. These pieces of paper are supposed to go into the child's backpack, where the parents can retrieve them at home, but sometimes they get lost or mangled, so the school would like to post them on the website.

We could set up Parent Notices as a blog, but we have another option available to us within Joomla: the category list. In this case, article titles are displayed on the page, and users can click the article title to go to the full text. For category lists, no introductory text is displayed on the page. In this case, we'd be working with the section of Notices and the category of 2010.

Again, return to the Article Manager and note how many articles are available for the Notices section. My site shows only one, so I will create two more articles using the methodology described earlier in the lesson. The titles for these articles will be changed to the following:

  • Third grade newsletter
  • Reminder: Monthly lunch fees due
  • Prevent the spread of colds and flu this winter

Now that the articles are created, let's put them in a category list. Go to Menus images Main Menu, click New, and then choose Articles from the next screen. Find the option for Category List Layout and select it. You should see a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 13-18.

As always, enter the title (Parent Notices) ...
