WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?
The domain name is the human-readable (and memorable) address you type into the web browser to access a specific website.
Your web browser is the software you use to access the Internet. If you're on a PC, you might use Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. If you're on a Mac, you might use Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. When working with Joomla, I recommend working with Firefox, a free and open-source web browser you can download from www.firefox.com.
In Figure 3-1, you're looking at www.joomla.org. You know this because the domain name is entered at the top of the browser window.
You may also hear domain names called URLs. URL stands for uniform resource locator. Technically speaking, a URL and a domain name are not exactly the same thing. However, they are frequently used interchangeably in conversation. You can safely assume if someone asks for a URL for your site, they're usually asking for the domain name, which is your website's address.
