Listening to Audio Books

Narrated stories have been a popular form of entertainment since the days of old radio serials, but audiobooks are finding legions of new fans in the digital age. Why haul a two-pound book around when you can download the audio version to your iPod and have someone read it to you?

Audible

One of the easiest ways to get audio books and similar entertainment is from Audible.com, which offers a huge selection. You can buy Audible files right at the iTunes Music Store (Figure 6-13), where more than 11,000 titles nestle alongside all those Phish and Weezer albums.

You don’t have to surf to Audible.com to find Audible content. The iTunes Music Store has more than 11,000 Audible titles in stock. (You can find out what else is in the Store in the next chapter.)

You can learn all about the iTunes Music Store in Chapter 7, but you can also buy direct from Audible at http://www.audible.com. There, you can choose from over 26,000 spoken recordings. These are downloadable versions of the same professionally produced audio books you see in stores—the latest bestsellers in popular genres, children’s books, and even old science fiction faves, like Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash. You’ll also find periodicals such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, plus speeches, lectures, and language instruction.
