Appendix D. iPod as eBook Reader and Newsstand

Your iPod’s Notes aren’t just limited to grocery lists and short reminders—thanks to shareware creators around the world, you can take full-length books, short stories, and Web pages along with you to read on your iPod’s screen. Several other programs fetch helpful information, like headlines, weather forecasts, and driving directions from the Internet, and slip it onto your iPod.

Shareware for Macintosh OS X

Macintosh fans have always had some of the most inventive shareware in the land, and iPod-themed programs are no exception. A few of them are listed here, but you can find many more at your favorite Mac shareware site. (And you can find links to all of the following on the “Missing CD” page at http://www.missingmanuals.com.)

  • NewsMac. If you’re a hard-core newshound, you’ll appreciate NewsMac’s ability to keep tabs on myriad computer and world news sites in a tidy desktop window. The program, shown in Figure D-1, can also sync news channels to your iPod with a single click. (If you like the software, NewsMac’s creators would appreciate a PayPal donation.)

  • Pod2Go. Pod2Go is great for news addicts who want to keep up with the latest headlines from news outlets like the BBC, CBS, Wired News, and the major iPod news sites. The program, which works with all iPods from the original granddaddy 5 GB iPods to the 2004 youngsters, can download stock quotes, movie listings, local gas prices, song lyrics, weather forecasts, and even headlines ...
