Database Instance Tuning

Although you will find that application-related issues normally correspond to the most substantial performance problems, it is also important to make sure that an Oracle XE database instance is properly configured to serve the expected load on the system. This section provides you with brief introductions to several important database instance tuning topics.

The System Global Area

The System Global Areaor Shared Global Area (SGA) is a collective term that refers to a database instance's shared memory caches. The data in an instance's SGA is data that Oracle XE shares among processes at work in the instance. Figure 10-8 and the following list identify the most prominent memory caches that make up the SGA.
