Tablespaces and Data Files

A tablespace is a logical organization of data within an Oracle database that corresponds to one or more physical data files on disk. Figure 8-2 illustrates the relationship between several tablespaces and their data files.

When you create a new data structure such as a table that requires space to store its data, Oracle allocates (reserves) space for the table from a tablespace of your choice; when you do not indicate a specific tablespace for a new table, Oracle allocates space for the table from your account's default tablespace.
