Synopsis

The Edit → Paste as Hyperlink option places a link to the previously selected location within your worksheet. When you click on the link, the specified location is displayed. You can create links within the current worksheet, to another worksheet, or even to another workbook.

Figure 4-5 shows how you can link to another worksheet to provide more detailed information. For example, cell A2 provides a hyperlink back to Sheet1, which contains detailed information about the annual travel expenses. When you paste a hyperlink into a cell, if the cell already contains a value, such as A2, which contained the text Travel, Excel maintains the cell value and creates a hyperlink. Changing the color of the cell contents to blue and underlining the text indicates the hyperlink. If the cell is blank when you paste into it, the actual hyperlink address is placed in the cell.

This command is similar to the Paste Link button on the Paste Special dialog that displays when you select Paste → Special. The main difference is that the command places a link in the selected cell, and the Paste Link button places a copy of the text with a link to the original location so that if the value of the original cell changes the pasted cell changes.

If you want to modify the display contents of a cell that contains a hyperlink, you can simply select the cell and type a new value. The hyperlink remains in the cell until you cut, clear, or delete the cell using the appropriate ...
