10.2 SERIES RL CIRCUIT WITH UNIT STEP INPUT – QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS

In this section, we study the behaviour of inductor current in a series RL circuit excited by a unit step voltage source qualitatively. The initial current in the inductor at t = 0 is assumed to be zero for the purpose of this analysis.

Unit step voltage is defined in the following manner. It has a step discontinuity at t = 0, and strictly speaking, the time instant t = 0 is excluded from the domain of the function. However, it is customary in Circuit Theory to represent this function with a solid line jumping from 0 to 1 at t = 0 in its plot as shown in Fig. 10.2-1
