8. The Laboratory
Many companies and government agencies use laboratories to analyze materials for various purposes. A laboratory could be used by a regulatory agency to identify salmonella in eggs, by a chemical manufacturer to determine a product grade, or by a quality assurance department to identify contaminants in a product. Whatever the purpose of the laboratory, the underlying model is common to them all.
Samples, Tests, and Observations
The laboratory process begins with a SAMPLE. (See Figure 8.1.) A SAMPLE could be taken from a SITE, or it could be more specifically taken from an ASSET—a PIECE OF EQUIPMENT or an INVENTORY.
