Generic routing encapsulation (GRE) is a tunneling protocol that can encapsulate a variety of protocol packets inside IPv4 and IPv6 tunnels. GRE was developed by Cisco.

Caution

GRE does not include strong security mechanisms to protect its payload. To ensure a secure tunnel, you should use IPsec in conjunction with a GRE tunnel.
