Operating system virtualization offers a different approach to server virtualization. It describes the model where separate environments run on top of a single shared operating system kernel without the use of hypervisor software. In other words, the host operating system running on the server performs functions that otherwise would have been performed by the hypervisor software. Separate environments run in a form of multiple isolated user space instances, sometimes also referred to as containers. Figure 17-7 depicts the operating system virtualization concept.
