Big Job, Small Tool

If one of your two camera bodies goes down, make sure you have a trusty alternate in the wings. I suggest a camera like the Nikon 1 (Figure 3.10). It’s a compact, silent, mirrorless camera that allows you to affix FX lenses using a Nikon FT1 Mount Adapter, as you can see in Figure 3.11. It takes up little room, produces decent images, can be used with a big lens, and makes no noise. If you’re documenting a situation where silence is a must, this camera will get you through just fine. You can also get the Nikon WP-N1 Water Housing for the Nikon 1 J2, which gives you the freedom to cover stories around or in the water without the threat of ruining your high-dollar camera systems.
