Appendix B. Wireless Hart

Introduction

HART is an acronym that stands for Highway Addressable Remote Transducer. It is a wired control and sensor network that is used for process control, environmental monitoring, energy management, plant monitoring, advanced diagnostics, plant automation, and equipment calibration. Currently, 22 million HART devices are in use (and were installed by the HART organization). Due to the demand for wireless sensor networks, the HART organization published new specifications for wireless HART (HART Protocol Revision 7) that are compatible with wired HART. Figure B.1 shows the Wireless HART protocol architecture and the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model.
