I suggest you have this kind of conversation with your new boss while you’re still in the “honeymoon days” of getting to know each other. Before any conflict arises, say something to your boss along the lines of, “I would like us to have an honest and direct style of communication with one another. I hope to have the kind of relationship whereby we both feel free to compliment and constructively criticize each other. I want you to let me know when I have done something well, and I want you to tell me when I have not met your expectations. I would like to hear these things right away, instead of saving them all up for my six-month performance review. This kind of continuous feedback helps me get better at my job on a daily basis. Likewise, I would appreciate it if I could give you feedback about when we are and are not working well together. . . .” You get the idea. What manager wouldn’t want this kind of high-quality communication?
