Why Is Workplace Romance on the Upswing?

It’s no wonder Cupid’s arrow finds its mark so often in our offices today:

  • The workplace is a safer place to meet people than a bar or online, and there is the advantage of repeated opportunities to develop a relationship.
  • The workplace provides an environment and culture you can share, which serves as a foundation for mutual interests and values.
  • More women are working side-by-side in almost equal numbers to men and in the same types of jobs, which increases contact with eligible potential partners.
  • The “other person” always sees you at your best. Your potential hook-up notices your professionalism, knowledge, business acumen, and other qualities consistently wrapped up in a nice package. In other words, you look pretty darn good to each other.
  • Employees are increasingly traveling together and enduring long hours. This provides more opportunities to become acquainted and share experiences, goals, and successes. Coworker interactions lead to camaraderie, bonding, and empathetic conversations (“she’s the only one who understands the stresses in my life”).
