Step 5. Aligning Your Investments with Your Income Plan

Your investments are not your retirement blueprint. They are the tools and solutions you’ll need to execute your blueprint once it has been drafted. They are important, but they need to be set up in conjunction with strategies that are appropriate and proven in a withdrawal scenario and should complement the blueprint. I watch business and investment programs on TV and lament the fact that what is pushed at people non-stop is that investment selection is key. That is not true. Your blueprint is your guiding influence. The investments must address your plan, not the other way around. As stated very early in this book, this time in your financial life should be planning and process driven, not product driven.
As such, I am approaching this section from the point of view of strategy rather than trying to suggest to you that one particular financial product works better than another. You and/or your advisor may prefer to use mutual funds, ETFs, individual stocks and bonds, managed fund portfolios, segregated funds, variable annuities or any combination of these. I am not going to go through the potential investment options one by one and compare features. That is for you and your advisor to work through. What I am going to do is focus on those things that I have found to really make a difference in planning and investing within a withdrawal scenario.
