Chapter 37. For the Dreamers

Have you heard of the movie Factotum, based on a Charles Bukowski story and starring Matt Dillon?

I was just reading the review in the New York Times and came across this great Bukowski quote:

How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed—there is, naturally, a scatological dimension to this—brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?

What a great question! That question is at the heart of the Portable Empire concept. If there's a rational answer to it, I've never heard it. And yet, isn't that what most people do?

What are the options?

For the last week, I've been playing with a magazine that is just full of ads for business ideas. It's one of those with ads like "Make $2,000 a day from your home stuffing envelopes," or "How you can make $50,000 a year selling sno-cones," or "Join our pyramid scheme and get your family in your down-line and you can be a millionaire in six weeks."

Pages and pages of ads like that. Apparently, there's a market for it.

It's sad, really. But it points to the fact that we're all looking for something better. Something more. More freedom, more time, more toys. That and the fact that there are a lot of dreamers out there.

Recently at our mastermind meeting, we talked about our plans for the future. Our dreams.

It's rewarding to watch ...
