This volume was designed for readers with little background in investing, but it does assume basic knowledge, along the lines of the typical reader of Money magazine. If you aren’t there yet, this chapter can fill you in. More experienced readers may also find it a helpful refresher.

Why Save for Retirement?

Most of us earn a living through a salary that (hopefully) grows over the years. But most people do not wish to work until they die. The years after the period of their lives in which they worked full time are conventionally called “retirement,” although today many “retirees” continue to work, at least part time.
