The Culture That Needs to Transform

It’s 6:00 p.m. Emily lunges toward the front door, her briefcase overflowing with work to do after dinner. She remembers walking to this same door a few years ago, arriving to the sound of unsteady footsteps racing to greet her. For a moment, as she struggles to open the door, the same positive neurochemistry she felt then courses through her brain.

Emily walks inside to see Michelle on the couch with her headphones on, eyes closed, and head bobbing to 130 beats a minute. Listening to repetitive patterns of noise interspersed with slight variations is mildly pleasing to an adult brain. To a teenage brain easily fired up by small neurochemical shifts, the same patterns can be completely engrossing. ...
