Is There a Relationship between Attitude and Learning?

Yes. The expression “openness to learning” is used to communicate that when a mind is open (free of blocks, fears, prejudices, hang-ups), it will more readily accept and retain new data and ideas. For example, if a student dreads taking a required course (calculus, chemistry, English, etc.), the chances of success are diminished because the fear constitutes a block to learning. However, through an “attitude adjustment” counseling session with the instructor, the block may be partially eliminated. Learning will be easier because the student’s attitude is more positive toward learning.
