Using line to FIGURE OUT A FIGURE

When I ask workshop classes what their most challenging subject is, the most common answer by far is “people.” As children, we developed an extensive repertoire of symbols about people. Later, when we attempted to draw them, the symbols were substituted in place of observation. Even though we are very familiar with the figure, we never had to create one. In order to reconstruct it, we need to forget about the hair, nose and other specific features and focus instead on shapes and their relationships.
