Paint a street scene AS A GROUP OF SHAPES

I had been to Buckfast Abbey in Devon, England, a number of times, and so on this occasion I did not bother taking my sketch pad and I left my camera in the car. I was just taking the workshop participants there for a little shopping. As luck would have it, however, I walked past this archway — which I had not previously seen as a painting possibility — as two nuns were walking through it. That made all the difference! Now it was a painting.

I quickly returned to the car and grabbed my camera to take a picture of the archway with the wonderful shadow shapes surrounding it, assuming I would just have to remember the nuns. But it was my lucky day. As I got ready to snap the picture, another nun walked ...
