Background

CSS (Cascading StyleSheets) was developed for use with HTML and it has an important role in making Web documents more interesting. It is one of the core technologies that lie behind the marketing term DHTML (Dynamic HTML). With CSS, it is possible to control the appearance of most HTML elements: to define the font, size, style and colour to apply to the text content of a paragraph, table cell or list item.

CSS 1.0 was released in 1996 by W3C, and it is reasonably well supported by current versions of the popular browsers. It is available from http://www.w3.org/pub/WWW/TR/REC-CSS1.
