HTML versions

There have been five versions of HTML, known as HTML Level One, HTML Level Two, HTML+, HTML Level Three and now HTML Level Four, of which HTML+ was an interim to Level Three that included tables. The respective DTDs are named HTML 2.0, HTML 3.2 and HTML 4.0 accordingly (level one predating full compatibility with SGML).

HTML 2.0 was the first version of HTML that conformed to the formal structures defined in the SGML standard, and has been supported by all browsers for so long that it is no longer necessary to discuss version 1.0.
