Descriptive markup

As stylistic elements are removed or deprecated, they are replaced by new descriptive elements. The following elements help stylesheet designers to develop more suitable formatting, and Web crawler search engines to perform more useful analysis of the document.

The Abbreviation element (Abbr) is used to identify an abbreviation in the text. It has a Title attribute, which is used to hold the full term:

...talk to <ABBR TITLE="Mister">Mr.</ABBR> Smith ...

Similarly, the Acronym element holds a form of abbreviation that substitutes each word in a name with one letter. The Title attribute is used in the same way:

... <ACRONYM TITLE="World Wide Web">WWW</ACRONYM> ...

The Quote element (Q) holds an in-line quotation:

 ... Shakespeare ...
